The Short Answer is Yes!
It's possible to keep a certain property whether you file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy. In most cases, you'll be able to keep all your assets. You can keep property that is “exempt.” Here is a list of some of the most common exemptions:
- Your residence
- Your vehicle
- Personal property such as jewelry, clothing, appliances, furnishings, household goods, musical instruments, and health aids
- Tools needed for your trade
- Pensions and retirement accounts (e.g., employer-sponsored 401(k) or 403(b) accounts) are generally protected, so it's rarely a good idea to liquidate these accounts
